ITALY. Florence. Renaissance Girolamo Savonarola Cast Brass Medal, ND (ca. 1500).
51.2 mm; 63.6 gms. Hill (1930)-1082, pl. 108; Arm III-169-I. Hooded bust of Savonarola, left, legend: "PORTIO MEA IN TERRA VIV / ENTIVM" around; Reverse: View of city of Florence with a hand, wielding a dagger, over the city. A dove, representing the Holy Spirit, perched on the sun's rays oversees. Legend: "POST GLADIVM SPS DONI SVP TERRAM" around. A high-relief well detailed later cast, neatly pierced at 12:00. Friar Savonarola (1452-1498), was a critic of the then-corrupt Papacy, and the personal nemesis of Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503). In the style of Niccolo Fiorerntino. Rich dark olive-brown patina, disturbed on the highest details of both sides where brassy luster shows through. EXTREMELY FINE.
