Cast Bronze Prince Gian Gastone de' Medici Medal, 1685. 87.2 mm; 188.8 gms. Long-haired bust of the future (and final) Grand Duke of Florence as a young teenager to right. Legend IO GASTO AB ETRVRIA PRINCEPS AET SVAE A XIV around. Signed M SOLD F below bust. Reverse: Winged Virtue directs the young prince away from Frivolity, shown holding flowers and lyre, toward the mountain top. Legend NVLLA NISI ARDVA VIRTVS above. Apparently Virtue was unsuccessful, as his later life of debauchery is legendary! The date is in the exergue, along with the initials of the sculptor: 1685 M S. By Massimiliano Soldani (1656-1740). Small piercing at 12:00. Superior surfaces for this issue. EXTREMELY FINE.
