NiccoloTodini, Governor of the Castel Sant Angelo. 43.9mm; 52.4 gms. Pollard [2007]-392; Kress-345. Bearded bust right, wearing armor with ruff collar. Legend NICOL TODIN ANC ARCIS S ANG PREFECTVS around. Signed D. P. (Domenico Poggini 1520-c.1590) on truncation. Reverse: Anepigraphic view of the castle, with flying flags, which was rebuilt by the Vatican as a fortress beginning in the fourteenth century. Todini, who was married to a niece of Pope Sixtus V, was Governor of the Castel Saint Angelo from 1585 till his death in 1591. Appealing warm chocolate patina with carefully chased fields. BOLD VERY FINE.
