Cast Bronze Giovanni Bottari Medal, Undated (c.1740). 89.1 mm; 178.3 gms. Molonari Coll.-162. Bust right in cap and robes. Name IOHANNES BOTTARIVS to left and right. Reverse: Chaotic scene with ship with broken mast foundering a rocky shore, a wolf attacking a dragon, and lightning strikes and breaks an ancient column upon which a a female figure leans. Legend IN HOC EGO at right. Signed G.Z.VE. below bust. Bottari (1689-1775) was an author and professor of ecclesiastical history before becoming custodian of the Vatican Library. Rich chocolate patina. EXTREMELY FINE.
