ITALY. Tuscany. Cast Bronze Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany Medal, ND, ca. 1740.
84.9mm; 212.8 gms. V &T-290. Armored bust of Cosimo right, legend COSMVS I D G MAGN DVX ETRVR around. Signed F. SELVI below truncation. Reverse: Legend FIDEM FATI VIRTVTE SEQVEMVR above Capricorn and constellation of seven stars. Part of Selvi's Medici Series (V &T 241-354). At age 17, when his cousin Duke Allessandro de' Medici was assassinated, Cosimo was appointed to carry on his rule. In 1569 he was elevated to the new position of Grand Duke by Pope Pius V, and continued to rule Florence until, distraught by the death of two of his sons to malaria, he abdicated in favor of his eldest son Francesco, and spent his final 10 years away from public life. A handsome medal, with rich brown patina, free from significant defects. Typical rough surface, although nicer than most. EXTREMELY FINE.
