ITALY. Cast Bronze Francisco Redi Portrait Medal, 1684.
87.7 mm; 165.0 gms. V &T-114/116 (1998); Bargello-7838. By M. Soldani (1656-1740). Draped bust right with long hair, legend FRANCISCVS REDI PATRITIVS ARETINVS around, and date 1684 below. Reverse: Minerva, a spear in her left hand, uncovering Nature, before a temple labeled SALVTI, as a snake rises to the left. Signed by the artist in exergue. Redi was a physician to the Grand Dukes, entomologist and poet. Dark brown patina with a few light spots on the obverse. EXTREMELY FINE.
