PORTUGAL. Rebuilding of Lisbon After Earthquake Silver Medal, 1775. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.
46.6 mm; 36.9 gms. Wellenhe-32. Unsigned, but by J. Gaspar. Equestrian statue of King José I. Legend MAGNANIMO - RESTITUTORI above. Variety with snakes on ground around the King's horse, and the male figure below being trampled by secondary horse. The date, 1775, in Roman numerals below. Issued to remember the rebuilding of Lisbon after the devastating earthquake of 1755. Reverse: Legend POST PATA RESURGENS above allegorical scene with crowned Lusitania surrounded by personifications of Trade, Navigation and Architecture being presented with the reconstruction plans. In Exergue, OLISIPO, the ancient Roman name for Lisbon. Beneath the gray and gold patina are light scratches, visible under magnification, indicating an old cleaning. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.
