SWEDEN. Cardinal Azzolini Bronze Medal, ND, ca. 1680.
By Maxmilian Soldani, but unsigned. 62.3 mm; 82.4 gms. Bargello II-161. Bust of the Cardinal in fur-lined cloak to left, legend DECIVS CARD AZZOLINVS around. Rev: Eagle on rock killing snake. Legend INVIDIAM VIRTVTE above. This piece is probably a contemporary cast reproduction. Cardinal Azzolini was appointed Queen Christina of Sweden's official representative from the Vatican and the pair were soon rumored to have fallen in love with each other. The rumors became so persistent that Pope Alexander transferred the Cardinal to Romania. Many letters to each other still exist, and while Christina's letters were open and explicit, the Cardinal's were more restrained - as befitted a celibate man of the cloth. He was at her side when she died in 1689, and he died as well a few weeks later. Possibly a restrike. BOLD VERY FINE.
From the Rockaway Collection.
Estimate: $150.00- $200.00
