Leo III the Isaurian (AD 717-741), with Constantine V (AD 720-775). PB seal (36mm, 26.12 gm, 12h). Facing half-length crowned busts of Leo III, on left, bearded, wearing chlamys and long-sleeved tunic with orbiculi on shoulder, and Constantine, wearing chlamys, holding between them a long cross, circular border / TωΝ Β-ΑCΙΛΙΚωN ΚΟΜΜЄΡΚΙ ωΝΑCΙΑC SK-ΙΡΙΛ CIЄ in five lines. Cf. Zakos-Veglerey, Byzantine p. 337, 260b (similar obverse, reverse naming a different Commercia). An extraordinarily detailed seal, with a beautiful chocolate brown patina. Possibly unique and highly important! Choice Extremely Fine. The Imperial Commercia were customs warehouses located at strategic spots throughout the empire. This seal, bearing the portraits of Leo III and Constantine V, is associated with one such Commercia, which seems to be named after an individual -- Unacias Skiril, a Greco-Slavic name.
