Tokens: Hacienda del PATALILLO Collection, Assortment of seven different pieces, each clearly related, from San Jose's Juan Hernandez and his Hacienda del Patalillo. These 19th century issues were listed in the Weyl auction of 1899. Eklund shows them under his numbers 1034 -1035 & 1036 whereas Rulau does under SJS 65 -66-67.Both show the normal issues, in three denominations distinguished by Roman numeral style numbers, as being issued in brass. Weyl indicates the set also existed in copper. We have not noted anybody indicating examples prominently and purposefully countermarked. The present group includes the standard brass issue but ONLY in one of its three values: the III (=3) Centavos. Included are two samples, one obviously circulated but nonetheless a fully undamaged VF, plus a nearly-uncirculated example with bright golden brass color, but also with many tiny carbon spots from inadequate storage over about 125 years. The second portion of this remarkable group is a FULL three denomination set showing I or II or III, each in nice quality, with a deeply incused G H on both sides of the central design on either side of each token. The G H flanks the value on one side and the national arms on the other. Final two examples are likely specimens that prompted the aforementioned Weyl "copper" listing; these BRILLIANT red lustrous examples are clearly not brass but rather copper or bronze (not likely but possible). They are the II and III denominations (the single "I" example was likely within Dana's huge token collection but is presently misplaced). A related but totally distinct "specimen" was offered as lot 26773 in the May 2012 Chicago sale; it combined the arms side of this issue with a Guatemala token type of the same era. Also a production in copper, that single item realized $1100 in spirited competition. Quite a remarkable set which someday might be supplemented (reunited?) with its three missing varieties. Ex. Dana Roberts Collection.

Estimate: 600-800 USD
