MYSIA, Atarnios. Circa late 1st century BC. Double chalkous (Bronze, 18mm, 4.83 g 10), Gaius Asinius, proconsul of Asia. Forepart of a horse to right; to left, coiled serpent above monogram of ΑΤΑΡ. Rev. ΓΑΙΟΥ / ΑΖΙΝΙΟΥ // ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤ[ΟΥ] / ΡΩΜΑΙ[ΩΝ] Kerykeion. BMC 7. SNG France 131. Apparently very rare. With considerable uncleaned deposits but with a fine green patina, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Quite a few members of the Asinius family were proconsuls in Asia: in SNG Paris, following Stumpf, it is ascribed to Cn. Asinius in 36/5 BC. However, it seems that all known examples of this coin are off-struck to the right on the reverse, thus obscuring the proconsul's praenomen; on this we can clearly read Gaius rather than the assumed Gnaeus. This seems to point towards Gaius Asinius Gallus Saloninus (Cos 8 BC and proconsul of Asia in 6/5), but the fabric of the coins does appear to be earlier.
