PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Arsinoe III, wife of Ptolemy IV (221-204 BC), queen of Egypt, , 220-204 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 11mm, 1.64 g 12), uncertain mint, probably Cypriote. Diademed head of Arsinoe III to right. Rev. [ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ] Cornucopiae. SNG Copenhagen 649-650. Svoronos 1161. Unusually nicely preserved and well-struck with an attractive dark brown patina. Extremely fine.
From the collection of a Man of the Cloth, now giving up the pursuit, acquired sometime in the 1990s.
This coin, which is especially well-preserved, is an example of a type that has long been known and is illustrated in Svoronos (who correctly saw it as an issue of Ptolemy IV for his wife Arsinoe III). Somewhat recently a curious book by M. Kreuzer makes the interesting claim that the coin was actually struck for Cleopatra VII; unfortunately this theory is so unlikely that it might be termed extremely eccentric. In any case, this piece is a remarkably fine example of the type, far better than those illustrated by Svoronos!
