Nach Gründung des Chalkidischen Bundes begann man mit der Emission von Münzen mit dem Bild der Lyra des Apoll auf der Rückseite. Drei kleine Emissionen von Goldprägungen im attischen Standard sind bekannt; die früheste wurde um 390 v. Chr. geprägt. Nach der Zerschlagung des Bundes 348 v. Chr. durch Philipp II. blieb die Signifikanz der Bundesprägungen dennoch erhalten: Philipp ließ seine eigenen Münzen nach dem Standard der chalkidischen Bundesmünzen prägen und wählte für seine Goldmünzen den Kopf des Apollon von Olynth.
When the Chalcidic state was established in 432/431 BC., the production of coinage in its own name began immediately. The obverse type for all denominations was the laureate head of Apollo, the reverse was Apollo's lyre except on denominations below the tetrobol. In the fourth century BC. three small issues of gold staters (on Attic standard) are known; the earliest being minted circa 390 BC. For about seventy years (420-348 BC.) the coinage of the Chalcidic League was the most important of the whole Macedonian area. It came to an end with the capture of Olynthos by Philip II in 348 BC. Nevertheless, its significance did not end as Philip's II coin standards for both gold and silver as well as the Apollo head on the obverse of the gold are all direct legacies from the Chalcidic League.
