In 1969 Dr. Küthmann and Dr. Overbeck, both ex Directors of the "Staatliche Münzsammlung München", declared this coin as authentic.

Desiderius, last king of the Lombards, organised under his predecessor Aistulf the Lombardian army of the city of Lucca, which grew into an important sanctuary to the Lombard King. This coin was most likely minted in the early stage of Desiderius' reign. The "Flavia" before the city name "LVCA", refers to the Roman imperial family 'Gens Flavia', which the Lombard kings chose to continue. Desiderius tried like other dynasties to consolidate his rule through an ingenious alliance and marriage policy, including the Italian regional centres like Lucca and significant territorial rulers as the Frankish king Charlemagne and the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III, both married to the daughters of Desiderius. Although having strong allies, his efforts failed eventually. Following the disagreement between Charlemagne and the Pope, Desiderius lost important allies including Tassilo and the city of Lucca, and shortly after the Lombard Empire was conquered by the Franks.
