Cappadocian Kingdom. Ariobarzanes I. 95-63 B.C. AR drachm (16.8 mm, 3.83 g, 12 h). Dated RY 22 (74/3 B.C.) Diademed head right / BAΣIΛEΩΣ APIOBAPZANOY ΦIΛOPΩMAIOY, Athena standing left, holding Nike, spear and shield; monogram left, KB in exergue; all within filleted border. Simonetta 30b; SNG Cop Supp 941 (same dies); BMC 90. EF. Of the few known examples of this coin with the filleted border reverse, one is known in the Simonetta collection, as well as one in the ANS, the Danish National Museum and the Cabinet des Médailles. This extremely rare reverse type with filleted border was probably issued in commemoration of Ariobarzanes I's restoration to the throne by Lucullus. It is the key drachm to the Cappadocian series.
