Danubian limes. Cast lead mystic plaque. Dacia and Moesia, 3rd-4th century AD. Obv. Plaque in the form of rectangular aedicula; on thympanum, to left, bust with lighted torch; to right, cuirassed bust; in the centre, Sol Invictus (Helios) in a chariot pulled by four horses, with radiate crown and cloak. Three rows of figures within Solomonic columns: in the upper row, Helen facing between the Dioscuri on horseback (the Danubian Horsemen), two star above them; to left, soldier with spear and shield standing right; to right, female figure standing left; on ground line, snake and fish trampled by Dioscuri's horses. In the middle row, feasting scene with diners at a table flanked by two shepherds, one of whom hanging animals from tree to left and by three naked attendants to right. In the lower row, amphora between lion and coiled snake; fish on tripod to left; cock standing left to right. Rev. Plain. PB. 120 x 99 mm. Very rare in this exceptional condition.
