Danubian limes. Cast lead mystic plaque. Dacia and Moesia, 3rd-4th century AD. Obv. Plaque with figural design in several scenes: arch with coiled serpents above in the upper corners; three bands of figures within the arch; Sol Invictus (Helios) in a chariot pulled by four hippocamps, with radiate crown and cloak. In the middle row, Helen facing between the Dioscuri on horseback (the Danubian Horsemen); soldier with spear and shield and fish below the horse to the left; figure standing and prone figure trampled by the horseman to the right. In the third row, feasting scene with diners at a table flanked by two naked attendants to right; to left, figure with zoomorphic head standing right and shepherd hanging animals from tree. In the lower row, amphora between snake and lion; fish on tripod to left; cock standing left to right. Rev. Plain. PB. 80 x 77 mm. Very rare in this exceptional condition. Magnificent grey patina. Good EF.
