C. Caecilius Metellus Caprarius. AR Denarius, 125 BC. Obv. Head of Roma right, wearing Phrygian helmet; below chin, X; behind, ROMA. Rev. Jupiter, crowned by Victory, in biga of elephants right, holding thunderbolt and reins; in exergue, [C] METELLV[S]. Cr. 269/1. B. 14. AR. g. 3.90 mm. 18.00 Scarce. A very attractive example, brilliant and lightly toned. Good VF/About EF. This reverse refers to the famous victory of L. Caecilius Metellus over the Carthaginians at Panormus in B.C. 251, when he captured all the enemy's elephants and later exhibited them in his triumph at Rome. (D.R. Sear, 'RSC', 1978, p. 20).
