India, Mughal, Shah 'Alam II (1759-1806), under East India Company, Rupee, 11.21g, Dar al-Khilafat Shahjahanabad, AH1221, ry.49, umbrella and cinquefoil in legend (KM.713), attractive dark toning, extremely fine.
This coin was struck while Shahjahanabad (Delhi) was under the protection of the East India Company following the second Maratha war. During this time the mint was also under British control, and Delhi Rupees were struck for circulation, presentation, and to pay the Emperor his allowance.
