(x) Edward III (1327-1377), fourth coinage, Treaty period, Noble, 7.33g, London, m.m. cross potent, edward dei gra rex angl dns hyb z aqt, king standing facing in ship, holding sword and shield, rev. + ihc avtem transiens per mediv illorvm ibat, floriate cross with lis at ends (cf. Schneider 75-76, both with saltire before edward; N. -; S.1502; L. A. Lawrence: 1933 Numismatic Chronicle, pp. 15-79 , plate XV11:4), good very fine, an extremely rare variety.
This obverse die is described by Lawrence (pl. XVII:4[same obverse die]) as being from Group C, with annulet before Edward and a crescent on the forecastle, but it clearly does not have either of these features.

The obverse die in question was mis-described by Lawrence. He stated that it had an annulet before EDWARD and a crescent on the forecastle which it does not. Therefore, although the coin is from the same die as the coin illustrated by Lawrence, it does not match Lawrence’s description in the text. This coin is not the coin illustrated by Lawrence, as although the obverses are from the same die, the reverses are from different dies. When North was preparing his book he presumably just went by the text in Lawrence and failed to notice the discrepancy between the description and the coin illustrated. This variety is not listed by North as according to his listing, all Treaty period nobles of London (North 1231-1233) have either a saltire or an annulet before EDWARD
