BRITISH COINS, Worcester or Shrewsbury mint, Groat, mm. lis over rose on obv., helmet on rev., rev. oval scroll garnished shield, colon stops, 1.72g/5h (Allen A-1; SCBI Brooker 1176, same dies; N 2622; S 3116). Large piercing, otherwise about very fine and well-struck for the type, dark tone £300-400

Provenance: Bt Baldwin 1999.
A disproportionate number of Worcester/Shrewsbury groats and threepences are found holed. The large size and careful execution of the piercings suggest they were contemporary and that the coins were given as presentation pieces to soldiers, perhaps to be worn in the same way as a Royalist badge - a practice which is not seen elsewhere
