Ancient Ariminum (modern Rimini) was a city of the Ager Gallicus situated on the coast of the Adriatic close to the mouth of the rivers Ariminus (now Marecchia) and Apusa (Ausa) and about 15 km south of the Rubicon. Ariminum was at first of Umbrian and Gallic foundation (Strabo Geography 5.1.11) and became a Latin colony in 268 BC. In the 3rd century Ariminum, together with Arretium, was an important strategic stronghold in the line of defence of the Roman Republic against the Gauls of the Padana plain and Italy.
