CHINA - ORDERS AND DECORATIONS, 中國 - 勳章, Qing Dynasty 清朝: Foochow Arsenal Silver Medal 福州船政成功大清御賜銀牌, ND (c.1874), Obv "大" and "清" at top separated by a pearl, "御睗銀牌" at centre flanked by two dragons, Rev "福州船政成功" flanked by clouds, all on a stippled field within scroll border, 86mm, 168g (cf Li Gongqing p.60 for gold medal). As made and very rare.
Made by the Imperial Palace Construction Section 造辦處 and presented to members of the European team led by French Navy officer Prosper Marc Giquel and colleague Paul d'Aiguebelle upon completion of the Fochow Arsenal in Mawei 馬尾, Foochow 福州 in 1874. The Arsenal was first proposed by Governor of Fukien of Chekiang Tso Tsung-Tang 閩浙總督左宗棠 and supervised by Minister of Naval Affairs Shen Pao-Chen 船政大臣沈葆楨.
