CHINA - MEDALS, 中國 - 紀念章, Qing Dynasty 清朝 (1644-1911 AD): Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM, founded 1896), Copper Medal, ND (c.1912), promoting their agent / representative in China, Arnhold Karberg & Co, struck in Germany, by Rudolph Meyer (1846-1916), Obv head of a crowned Valkyrie to right, Rev legend in German in centre and Chinese around and below, naming the manufacturer and agent, 德國喀可魯巴敦軍械子彈製造廠 - 經理主人瑞記信義洋行, 34mm, set in a silver brooch mount. Very fine and extremely rare.
Arnhold Karberg & Co was a German-registered trading company established in September 1866 on Honam Island on the opposite bank of the Pearl River to Canton. The founders were pioneering trader Jacob Arnhold, a German Jew and his Danish partner Peter Karberg. By 1901 the firm had 37 branches throughout China. The medal possibly dates from 1912 when the Chinese Central Government planned to raise $6,323, with a 6% Arnhold Karberg Loan I Bond, issued in London, for the purchase of naval and military armaments from Skoda-Werke in Pilsen (Bohemia/Austria; now CSSR) and Monfalcone Shipbuilding Yards in Italy. With such money being spent on armaments they became an obvious partner for Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken.

Estimate: US$250-300
