New Kingdom. Circa 1550-1070 BC. Steatite scarab with partial blue-grey glaze (15x11). Face engraved with Osiris to right, holding staff, in the Opening of the Mouth Ceremony. An ankh before him. Also known as the Opening of the Mouth and Eyes, the ritual was performed to ceremoniously open the mouth and eyes of the deceased so that they were able to see, breathe, speak, eat and drink in the afterlife. Rough and chipped in areas. Pierced.

From the Carl Devries Collection.
