Terra cotta chalice. Iron Age, circa 1200-1100 BC. Fired chalice with flared base and rim. Height: 11.8cm. A few minor chips, but overall a well-preserved example.

From the David Hendin Collection, purchased in Jerusalem from J. Zadok, 1988. Found in Israel.

It is not known whether these scarce chalices were used in performing rituals or simply for daily use. See The First 4,000 Years, the Ratnor Collection (1978), p. 43 for a very similar object, which recalls Zachariah 14:20-21: "...and the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar; and every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be sacred to the Lord of hosts."
