GERMANY. Assault on Taku Forts Silver Medal, 1900. NGC Unc Details--Harshly Cleaned.
Marienburg-7172; Li-pg. 101. Map of the Haiho River and its fortifications; Reverse: SMS Iltis sailing right. Struck to commemorate the assault of the Eight Nations Alliance during the Boxer Rebellion. The depicted ship steamed up the Haiho River where it sustained many casualties, but was eventually successful in capturing the Taku Forts. The German vessel SMS Iltis, which had been launched in 1898 from the Schichau-Werke shipyard in Danzig, took sixteen shells during the assault, the highest of any foreign ship in the battle. Though harshly cleaned, the medal retains full uncirculated details, with all of the design elements crisp and clear. Flawless rims, the piece has never been dropped, and aside from cleaning is free of other problems. NGC Unc Details--Harshly Cleaned.
