JAPAN. Taiwan Expedition Silver Medal, Year 7 (1874). CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.
25 mm. Barac-1; Gongqing Li- Pg. 62. RARE. Memorial medal issued to commemorate the Mudan Incident which led to the invasion of Taiwan by Japan. The Japanese punitive expedition to Taiwan in 1874, (referred to in Japan as the Taiwan Expedition and in China as the Mudan incident), was a punitive invasion launched by the Japanese in retaliation for the murder of 54 Ryukyuan sailors by aborigines near the southwestern tip of Taiwan in December of 1871. The sailors had arrived there after becoming shipwrecked on the island. The success of the expedition, which marked the first overseas deployment of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, revealed the fragility of the Qing Dynasty's hold on Taiwan and encouraged further Japanese adventurism. The medal, awarded in 1874, was the first Japanese medal to be issued for military conquest. Struck in silver and attached by swivel mount with moderate gunmetal blue toning, and suspended from the original ribbon which includes mounting clasp. A RARE and highly historical medal, housed within the purple velvet lined original box of issue. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.
