MALAYA AND BRITISH BORNEO. Labuk Tobacco Plantation Tokens, ND (prior to 1925). PCGS PROOF-62 RB to PROOF-63 Secure Holders.
Prid-43, 45, 46 & 50; Tan-NBT14, 13a, 13c & 9. 4 pieces in lot. Includes examples of the Dollar in copper (PR-62 RB), the 50 Cents in both copper (PR-62 RB) and nickel (PR-62), and lastly a 20 Cents in copper (PR-63 RB). Struck for use on plantations within the territory which employed at least 100 laborers. The token coinage of British North Borneo was originally issued by the plantations themselves, but eventually became subject to regulation by Great Britain after widespread abuse. Beginning in 1920, plantations were required to withdraw from circulation 20 percent of the outstanding circulating token coinage by December 31st of each year, with the token coinage withdrawn in its entirety on December 31, 1924. Hence, there are few surviving examples today. An extremely attractive and nicely matched set overall. The copper pieces in this group are all nearly full red with just enough toning to demonstrate their original uncleaned status. The nickel 50 Cents token is an outstanding example; well struck and clearly a presentation piece with proof qualities readily apparent. The 21st edition of Standard Catalouge of Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei assigns a total valuation of $4,600 to the coins. For collectors of this numismatic niche, a real cornucopia of material that will make a terrific addition to the collection. PCGS PROOF-62 RB to PROOF-63 RB Secure Holder.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
