Head of Persephone left, wreathed and wearing a triple pendant earring and necklace / Ajax, nude but for a crested Corinthian helmet, in a battle stance right, holding a shield decorated with a serpent with his left arm and a short sword in his right hand; underneath, a Phrygian helmet; ΟΠΟΝ - ΤΙΩΝ. Rare.Ex CNG Triton XI: 142.This rare and beautiful stater presents a high art depiction of Persephone on the obverse. The reverse depicts the hero Ajax son of Oileus, commander of the Lokrians in the Trojan War, who led a fleet of forty ships against Troy in the war to claim Helen, famously characterized in Greek mythology as the most beautiful woman in the world. In his classic Iliad Homer describes one poignant Bronze Age conflict, the heart of the Trojan War.
