Abbasid 1st period, al-Rashid (170-193h), dirham, Madinat al-Salam 170h, rev. inner margin: mimma amra bihi 'Abd Allah Harun amir al-mu'minin, wt. 2.96gms. (Lowick 1269; Album 219.6), extremely fine and scarce. This type of reverse is found on the coinage of Madinat al-Salam only in the years between 170h and 179h. With each succeeding year throughout this decade the first inner marginal legend became less and less prominent until it finally degenerated into a totally illegible series of small annulets. It is interesting to note that during this same period the coinage of Madinat al-Salam appears to have been struck in much smaller quantities that those from other mints such as al-Muhammadiya. Why this is so remains a mystery. (£350 - 400)
