Ottoman, Ahmad III b. Muhammad (1115-1143h), gold five ziynet ashrafi, Qustantaniyya 1115h, wt. 17.09gms. (Pere 504; KM.182), small piercing at 12 o'clock, otherwise about extremely fine, very rare in this condition. It was during the reign of Ahmad III that the Ottomans adopted the Venetian custom of striking multiples of the ducat for use as ornaments and savings. The mint charged a percentage of gold to earn a profit on this special coinage. Because these coins were normally mounted for suspension they suffered inevitable damage, but this example is in particularly good condition. (£4000 - 4500)
