After Alexander the Great's siege and destruction of Tyre in 332 BC, the people of Sidon submitted and asked Alexander to choose a new king. He settled a member of the royal house named Abdolonymus, who had fallen on such hard times he was feeding himself by the cultivation of a kitchen garden. Brought before Alexander, Abdolonymus was asked how he was able to endure his poverty; he replied "would be to heaven, I may as well bear my prosperity!" Alexander was so delighted he installed Abdolonymus in the palace of his predecessor and augmented his dominions from the surrounding territory. The coinage struck in Alexander's name at Sidon is dated from the start of Abdolonymus's reign in 332 BC.
