Extremely rare! A simply amazing piece of ancient art, struck from dies engraved by a master engraver. NGC AU★ 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Though far removed from mainland Greece, the mint city of Paneticaeum produced coins of extraordinary artistry, usually noted on its popular gold staters. However, even this humble silver drachm received the attentions of a truly talented engraver, producing a frontal portrait of Pan remarkable for its lively expression and unusual perspective (it has been noted that Pan is clearly looking back at the viewer over his shoulder). Even the bull head on the reverse is sensitively rendered in three-quarter view.
