CIMMERIAN BOSPORUS. Theodoseia. Ca. 400-350 BC. AR triobol(?) (13mm, 2.64 gm, 3h). Head of Athena left, wearing crested Attic helmet / ΘE-OΔ-EΩ, facing bucranium, fillets hanging from horns. HGC 7, 178. Anokhin 932. MacDonald 91. Extremely rare, with only eight specimens recorded! NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 3/5, scuff.Theodoseia was founded as a Milesian colony on the eastern shore of the Cimmerian Bosporus (Crimea) in the 6th century BC. It became a trading rival with Panticapaeum and eventually came under the control of the Kingdom of the Bosporus in the mid-4th century BC. The city's silver coinage was issued only sporadically and is extremely rare today, with known specimens of most denominations numbering in the single digits. All feature a head of Athena on the obverse, and a facing bull's head or star on the reverse.
