L. Appuleius Saturninus (104 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 3.83 gm, 3h). Helmeted head of Roma left, E behind / Helmeted head of Roma left, L SAT (the AT ligate) behind. Crawford 317/1. RSC Appuleia 2. Sydenham 579. Rare! Pleasant old cabinet toning. Good Very Fine. This whimsical issue by L. Saturninus seems superficially to be an "error" coin pairing two obverse dies; however, the slight differences in dies and the moneyer's name on the "reverse" suggests the pairing was intentional, as does the existence of a companion issue of the same year pairing two "reverses."
