Lucilla, wife of Lucius Verus (Augusta, AD 164-182). Orichalcum sestertius (30mm, 23.75 gm, 11h). Rome, under Aurelius and Verus, AD 164-169. LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F, draped bust right / PIETAS S - C, Pietas standing left, sacrificing over lighted altar to left. RIC (Aurelius) 1755. BMCRE 1209. A simply gorgeous large bronze of this attractive empress, with a perfect chocolate patina and untouched surfaces. NGC Choice XF 5/5 - 5/5. Although sympathetically portrayed by beautiful actresses in the movies Fall of the Roman Empire and Gladiator, the real-life Lucilla seems not to have been such an admirable character, apparently coveting titles and power, and eventually being executed by her brother Commodus after a failed conspiracy. She was, however, quite beautiful, as the portrait on this wonderful sestertius reveals.

Estimate: 3200-4000 USD
