Justin II (AD 565-578). AV tremissis (17mm, 1.47 gm, 6h). Ravenna. D N IVSTI-NVS P P AVC, diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Justin right / VICTORIA AVGVSTORVN (sic), Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath and globus cruciger; star to right; CONOB in exergue. Sear 410. DOC 212. MIB 26. Rare! A simply extraordinary example, sharply struck on a huge, medallic flan and displaying full mint luster. NGC Choice MS 5/5 - 5/5.The misspelling of "Augustorum" with a "VN" ending would seem to be a one-off die-engraver's error, but it occurs about as often as not on tremisses minted for Justin in Ravenna. The engravers employed there would seem to have been good craftsmen, but poor spellers, if indeed they were literate at all. Ex Collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams; ex CNG 35 (20 September 1995), lot 1293.
