Victoria gold "Shield - Inverted A" Sovereign 1880-S AU55 PCGS, Sydney mint, KM6, S-3855. Perhaps the most collectible variety within the series of Australian Victoria sovereigns, the V in VICTORIA clearly made using an upside down A letter punch. This error, glaring to say the least, must have been caught and corrected not long after striking began, as few examples survive today, and almost none exist in Mint State (PCGS hasn't graded any Mint State examples while NGC has only graded one). As the grade would indicate, the present example displays evidence of circulation, but the detail at the highest points remains almost entirely full; moderate ticks are scattered about, but where the devices rise from the fields, shimmering original luster is often present. The reverse, nearly fully lustrous, shows few sings of circulation. Easily finer than the last PCGS-graded example we offered, an AU50 that brought $4,993.75, and given that only two examples sit above the present offering in the PCGS census, a coin that is sure to attract significant competition from the competitive set builder. From the Collinson Collection of Australian Sovereign PCGS Registry Sets
