Charles IV gold 4 Escudos 1791 So-DA VF Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Santiago mint, very rare transitional issue with CAROL.IIII in the legend instead of the more common CAROL IV, KM41.2, Fr-23a (Rare and unpriced). Even wear, with reddish-gold patina and moderate handling marks. The only previous offering of this type was in the October 27, 2004 Hess-Divo Auction Lot 1273, where it was described, "Extremely rare. Only two specimens known of this type-Very Fine," and it sold for $3957. Does this example make three pieces known? We're not certain. All we can determine is that this type is quite rare, with only a very few pieces known.
Estimate: 3000-3500 USD
