Costa Rica
Central American Republic 2 Reales 1849 CR-JB F12 NGC, San Jose mint, KM24 ("4-6 known"). Essentially unflawed and attractive for the designation with even wear throughout and all details of the design still sharp. The noted mention in the SCWC appears accurate, since five examples have indeed been confirmed by the cataloguer after diligent research, the single piece in higher preservation being the ex-Jorge Lines example (H. Christensen 5/1984, lot 218). One of the rarest issues of the challenging and popular series of the Central American Republic coinage (note its absence from the Meyer group) since the commonly encountered type VII lion countermark over coins of this date (KM94) in technically an issue from the Republic of Costa Rica, and eminently collectible as such. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part II
