Costa Rica
Central American Republic gold Escudo 1828 CR-F XF Details (Plugged) NGC, San Jose mint, KM14. Previously mounted with a neat plug from reddish gold at 12 o'clock, yet a nicely detailed coin with sharply struck features and limited actual wear, thus quite attractive for the designation. The rarest date for this type - with only 4 confirmed examples by the cataloguer and no public offerings traced in the past 30 years - and historically important since part of the first year of regular gold coinage of Costa Rica issued under the Central Republic. Missing in the Norweb, Eliasberg (where a contemporary counterfeit of the date was misidentified as genuine: ANR 4/ 2005, lot 1661) and Mayer collections and still vastly desirable despite the noted defects since one of the keys to complete this challenging and popular series. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part II
