Republic Type V Countermarked 8 Reales ND (1846) Choice VF - Holed, San Jose mint, KM58. "Type V" countermark over a Potosi Charles III cob 8 Reales 1762 P-VY. Authorized by decree of October 15, 1846 and placed upon cobs of acceptable quality. Base coin, VF and pleasant with a rather bold strike, neatly pierced at 11 o'clock on the obverse, countermarks Choice VF and from late state dies with the 1848 date, thus very rare as such. It is clear that this operation was performed until 1849 since a few examples showing the 1848 (such as in the present coin) or 1849 dates on the obverse 1 Escudo die that was used are known. A wholesome and attractive example of this rare counterstamped issue despite the noted flaw with a fine pedigree.Ex.
