Costa Rica
Republic Type VI Countermarked 4 Reales (1848) XF45 NGC, San Jose mint, KM-unl. (for host coin). Countermark over a Bolivia 4 Soles 1830 PTS-J. Host coin Choice Very Fine, countermark Extremely Fine and sharply struck. Authorized by edict of January 27, 1847 (see description of previous lot). Very rare host coin combination for this rare countermarked necessity issue, and among the finer of only six examples noted by the cataloguer thus particularly desirable as such. The aforementioned noted examples include the ex-Gibbs specimen (Hans Schulman 3/1966, lot 539) and a coin permanently impounded in the Museum of the Central Bank of Costa Rica - which has the 1846 date on the counterstamp -, plated on p. 57 in the recent publication "Del Real al Colon" by Museum curator Manuel Chacon).

Estimate: 5000-7000 USD
