Republic gold Type VII Countermarked 1/2 Escudo ND (1849-57) AU50 NGC, San Jose mint, KM80. Type VII lion countermark (misidentified as Type VI on holder), authorized by decree of January 8, 1857. Base coin (KM13.2 with inverted "C" in mintmark and quite scarce in its own right) Extremely Fine with attractive surface quality, countermark better. A rare undercoin combination for this otherwise common issue, unlisted in the SCWC and also missing in the otherwise impressive Mayer group.
