Republic 50 Centimos 1914 (P)-GCR MS63 NGC, Philadelphia mint, KM143. Choice Mint State with sharply struck details, full mint luster and scattered mild handling evidence well within the confines of the designation. Very few of these pieces dated 1914 are known without the 1923 "1 Colon" revalidation countermark. Missing in the Meyer collection, with only one other public offering noted by the cataloguer in recent years (the ex. Webster coin, graded MS62 NGC). That lesser coin (Heritage Auctions 1/2013, lot 20460 for $4,250) and the present piece are the only pieces currently certified at either major third party grading service. Until an example of the mysterious 1904-GDR surfaces (see our description of the previous lot), this coin should be considered the most desirable representative of the KM143 issue. In fact, its desirability and importance should increase since a logical argument could be put forward in considering the 1914-GDR 50 Centimos as a different type, since minted in Philadelphia and not carrying the assayer initials, as did the 1902 and 1903 dated coins minted in Costa Rica. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part II

Estimate: 4000-5000 USD
