Costa Rica
Republic late 19th Century Experimental Strikings Quartet, KM-unl, cf. Murillo p. 116-117. Four experimental trial strikes, as follows:- trial strike in pewter from the obverse die of the 50 Centavos 1889-H. Nearly Uncirculated with light surface pitting. - trial strike of the obverse hub of the projected 1892-1893 50 Centavos with incomplete date "189x" on a debased silver planchet with two-line inscription "ESSAI 60/40" on the reverse. AU with light cleaning evidence. The only such specimen seen. - pair of matching trial strikes in pewter for the projected 1892-1893 50 Centavos issue. Nearly as struck with minimal pitting. The pair plated in Murillo on page 117 and extremely rare. A little known project to resume the mintage of full-fineness (0.900) coins of 50 Centavos and 1 Peso with the standing Indian design was carried out by the Government of Jose Rodriguez Celedon (President between 1890-1894). German citizen Daniel Wendermann arrived in San Jose in November of 1892 and proceeded to engrave dies for both denominations. The project was abandoned after new President Rafael Yglesias Castro took office in 1894 and decided instead to implement the gold standard system. The latter three trial trial strikes are the only related patterns seen by the cataloger related to that ill-fated venture and should prove of interest to the advanced collector of Costa Rica. From the Pura Vida Collection, Part II

Estimate: 900-1200 USD
