Louis XIII Klippe of 10 Sols 1641 XF45 NGC, Aire-sur-la-Lys besieged, Brause-Mansfeld pl. 9, 1, Maillet 4, Huntington no. 1001.1.3439. Attractive, deep cabinet tone, with a few light marks on the reverse. Comparable strike to the Huntington specimen, which realized a hammer of 5,000 ChF in 2012 (NGSA 7, lot 651), though that piece featured some distracting marks near the bottom of the obverse. Very rare.Aire-sur-la-Lys is located in the County of Artois, which fell under Spanish rule after 1579. During two separate instances in 1641, the city was besieged by French troops, resulting in these klippe issues, bearing the title of Louis XIII, and conveying that he was a "pius, just, and invincible king."
