British India. Victoria Original Proof Rupee 1862-(C) PR64 Cameo PCGS, Calcutta mint, KM473.1, S&W-4.52; Obv. F, Rev. VII. A very rare original proof of the issue, with all-over dove-gray tone that brightens into a blend of lovely iridescent hues when tilted beneath a light. Beneath the tone, some frost on the raised design is observed and gives the coin a touch of cameo contrast. Minimally handled, as the grade suggest, with no visible flaws; perhaps even conservatively graded as such. Only the second original rupee of the date we have sold (with only a couple more examples appearing in other archived auction records), the previous offering being contained within a partial set. As the largest silver denomination struck during the period, a very important crown, not only for collectors of India, but for those who specialize in elite world type as well.
Estimate: 5000-7000 USD
