British India. George VI nickel Proof Pattern 1/4 Rupee 1946-(B) PR64 NGC, Bombay mint, S&W-9.102a, KM-Pn1, RRRR, wide rim. Superbly struck, with fully mirrored fields and some cameo contrast. Heavy die-polishing lines are noted in the fields (as struck), and no significant flaws are noted. These seem to have been originally offered as six-piece double Proof sets in an original case, consisting of two each, 1/4, 12, and 1 Rupees. There is some conflict in the reports of how many complete sets are known with S&W saying two, and Baldwin's saying three, but that they do not not the location of the third set. In Baldwin's sale of the David Fore Collection, there was a partial set, in case, missing only one of the 1/4 Rupees. A single Rupee was also offer in the Fore Collection. A 1/4 and 1/2 Rupee was offered, in January of this year, by Steve Album Rare Coins. They were certified Proof 63 NGC with the 1/4 Rupee having considerable dark incrustation on the rim, and the 1/2 Rupee appearing to be quite nice. These are all of the recent offerings we can reference of these extremely rare coins.

Estimate: 3500-4000 USD
